What is BS OHSAS 18001:2007?

Contrary to popular belief BS OHSAS 18001 : 2007 is not an ISO standard. It is a British Standard that has been adopted internationally. It lays out requirements to which an organisation must adhere, to demonstrate that it’s associated health & safety risks are managed within a framework committed to continually improving it’s Occupational Health & Safety performance. The framework is commonly referred to as a health & Safety management system. As BS OHSAS 18001 : 2007 is an internationally recognised standard, many health and safety management systems are based on its requirements.

The standard focuses on how your organisation

  • Controls important documentation and records,
  • Continually identifies, manages and reduces its significant health & safety risks,
  • Complies with applicable health & safety legislation,
  • Reviews internal processes and manages accidents,

Organisations that we have helped comply with this standard;

New Paradigm Consulting specialises in streamlining management systems and here is a tip for you to reduce some of the administration associated with meeting the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001 : 2007.

Many organisations are under the impression that because BS OHSAS 18001 : 2007 is not an ‘ISO’ standard, they have to have a separate system to manage Health & Safety. Complying with different standards via separate documented management systems can create a lot of duplication.

The environmental standard ISO 14001 : 2004 is written in a similar format to BS OHSAS 18001 : 2007, therefore making it beneficial to have a single integrated management system to meet the requirements of both.

This will reduce the need for duplication in many areas, such as (but not limited to);

  • Internal Audit—You may be auditing the same process more often than needed.
  • Management Reviews—If you are carrying out separate management reviews to comply with each system, they can be combined.
  • Number of procedures and forms—Get rid of many forms and procedures as the areas common to each standard can be combined into a single procedure or forms.

Please contact New Paradigm Consulting if this situation is familiar to you and we can discuss other opportunities for streamlining your health & safety management system with the emphasis on reducing the effort required to manage it. The same process applies if you run a separate management system complaint with other ISO / AS standards alongside your health & safety management system.

Please contact us if you wish to implement a management system compliant with BS OHSAS 18001:2007 within your organisation.
